What is Self Care?

What exactly is self-care?

Self-care is a term we have been hearing a lot more of recently. Have you noticed? We had heard a bit about it before Covid took over the world, but when the pandemic changed our lives forever we saw something of a revolution in the health, wellbeing and personal care industries.

No longer was self-care a dirty word. Instead has been embraced and championed as an integral part of being a human. For us longtime self-care believers in the world, we collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, this movement is being recognised as significant, not selfish.

It’s about giving yourself permission

So, what is self-care?

Self-care is all about the relationship you have with yourself. Doing things for you that are kind, healthy, conducive to happiness and good for your mental state of mind. It’s about giving yourself permission to feel loved and appreciated by your own beautiful self.
It’s about allowing yourself to enjoy the things that make you feel better about facing each and every day. And it’s critical in strengthening resilience so that life’s inevitable curveballs don’t knock us off our tracks.

What does self-care look like?

What we all need to be mindful of is that self-care looks slightly different for different people, and that is down to personal preference and individual drivers. What do we mean by that? It means that some people love long baths to make them feel good while others prefer a quick jog in the sunshine. Some like both!

What we’re getting at is, there’s no right or wrong. Discovering what self-care practices work for you is all part of the process.

What are some examples of self-care?

This is merely scratching the surface on all sorts of healthy things you can offer your mind, body and soul and we highly recommend figuring out what self-care practices suit the uniqueness of your wonderful self.
Over the course of our blog series we will be exploring various self-care practices and other topics around being kind to yourself. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about some of our favourite things.
